A Lot of Lovin in Monterrey, Mexico

Did You Know? During traditional Mexican weddings, the bride & groom are linked together with a Lazo to symbolize their joining in love and trust.  The Lazo is placed by sponsors either around the couple’s necks, shoulders or wrists.

The placement of the Lazo occurs during a special wedding prayer, after the bride and groom have exchanged vows. The couple wears the Lazo throughout the remainder of the service and the couple keeps the Lazo as a keepsake. ( v i a )

Fitting in perfectly with the theme of L O V E through February, I went to a gorgeous wedding in Monterrey, Mexico last weekend.

Love exuberated over the entire evening, from the church to the reception to the dancing.

The best way I can describe the night was being flooded with emotion, in a way that stuck with me for a few days.  I looked at the bachelor’s around me & you could see a sparkle in their eyes throughout the evening as well, you literally couldn’t help feeling a deep love throughout the entire wedding.

What perfect timing for an experience like that.

The couple was stress-free, focused on each other, mature, unbearably excited, and authentically themselves and that radiated to the guests.

I’m still a bit speechless.

As far as Monterrey, I’ve never been before.  A few friends of mine have family from there so I was excited to put a name to a place.  I love traveling to locations that carry meaning.

Whether a small town in Mexico where friends grew up or Amsterdam where I was able to visit the Anne Frank Museum which I dreamed of being able to do since the 3rd grade.

Giving myself purpose behind a trip adds spice.

Having said that, it was raining & cloudy most of our trip. We were looking forward to visiting the mountains and walking through the parks but the fog was pretty low.  STILL, we made the most of it.

If you follow my Instagram you’ll notice we managed to meet an Egyptian man selling eye lash glue.  I made myself as high maintenance as humanly possible & went on the hunt for glue to pin down my fake eyelashes.  Real winner girlfriend here.   After struggling through Spanish to explain that I was looking for eyelash glue we received scribbled down directions, also in Spanish, to a market down the street.  These are the moments Wafiq falls in love with me, a Scavenger hunt in the Mexican streets at night with super white American blonde chick, real adventurous.

After many corn stands & wrong left turns, we arrived at a huge market with thousands of standing booths inside.  The Lord himself directed us to a booth with Arabic writing on the top.  DING. DING. Eyelash glue.

Wafiq noticed Arabic and started speaking with the man running the booth while I jumped around the market with joy over our accomplishment.  The gentleman managed to leave Egypt 7 years ago, then married a Venezuelan woman while living in Mexico, and now they have a 2-year-old Mexican child.   Tons of culture in one conversation.  I think he felt bad for Wafiq & decided it was imperative I take the eyelash glue for free.

We ate tons of great food, drank WAY more tequila than I thought my body would tolerate, and I managed to survive yet another plane ride.

I definitely want to visit Monterrey again & am needing suggestions.  I want to go back & find the prettiest churches, the most delicious foods, and the best views – any advice will be appreciated.
