5 Rules For Acceptable Bragging

Did You Know?  In a survey of 2,000 people, more than 75% admitted to lying about themselves on social profiles.  Only 18% said that their Twitter and Facebook profiles accurately represent them.

( v i a )

There’s something about being a badass bragger that I love.

If you do it wrong, than bragging is horrifically obnoxious.

5 Rules-for-Bragging

I love hearing people talk about what they’re passionate about, what makes them happy.  Whether that was a time in their life or an event they’re currently going through.  To see them get excited & feel comfortable enough opening up is exciting.  Conversations like these really get me going.

But there’s also people that don’t know how to brag properly.  They’re more focused on being a show off than sharing good news.  I think if you have to glorify every part of your life & constantly talk about it, there must be some self-confidence issues going on.  (LOL I’m laughing at my physiological conclusions here, but stay with me)

I broke down 5 Rules To A Good Brag because I think at some point bragging is awesome, but you have to do it correctly.

5 Rules To Being A Badass Bragger

  1. Wait for someone to ASK YOU about something.  This rule is a little tricky because sometimes people don’t know what to ask.  But, for the most part, always wait for someone to ask about you & what you’ve been up to. If that’s your children, dog, career, vacation, relationship, boyfriend – wait for them to ask.  “How’s work going?”  “I saw you ran a marathon, was it hard?” “How’s Bernice?”  If they never ask, that’s pretty telling, they don’t give a shit. HA!  Send them to my post on: LISTENING.
  2. Shut Up.  Conversation tip across the board – Shut Up.  Don’t go on forever about anything, ever.  No matter who you are or how important the info you’re sharing is, remember to cut it off. Or at least stop, breathe, and ask for questions?
  3. Think about the WHY.  Why are you sharing?  Are you sharing because you want to feel better about yourself?  That’s not the right reason.  Are you sharing because you’re excited & want others to feel excited too?  Then brag away! But don’t brag simply so you can feel cool, or better, or special.  Brag because you’re overjoyed & want others to feel overjoyed too.
  4. Always express your GENUINE gratitude & appreciation.  This is the most important one to being a good bragger.  You have to always make sure you express how lucky you are to be married to the top RE Agent in the U.S. ( 😉 )  Or how grateful you are to travel through the African Safari for 6 months of the year.  Or how appreciative you are that you have the career of your dreams.  I don’t know what you’re bragging about, but it’s important to ALWAYS be humble while bragging.  Then others know, you know, you’re lucky.
  5. Try to include your audience.  Sometimes you might be bragging about something huge.  You’re getting married, you’re having a kid.. That’s big stuff, and likely your audience isn’t going through that large of an event to equally be able to brag about it… Still try to include them, rather than talk AT them forever.  If they have kids, or got married, try to relate or ask questions.  Help them remember those times.  Bring them in, because talking AT people is really annoying, so do your best to include them somehow.5 Rules-for-Bragging

5 Rules-for-Bragging

What do you think about Bragging?!  Funny topic right?  Bragging is weird to admit because it’s so much conversation about yourself!  But it’s fun to be excited with people who are excited, so if you brag correctly – then brag away!

I’m off to brag to Wafiq about how I was paid today and have yet to blow it all online shopping!  I’m sharing with him because I’m excited & I’ll ask him how he’s doing on his savings so we can be proud together!  HA!

Have a great weekend everyone! Go out, brag away, and be thoughtful…

Making Friends, Having Friends, Maintaining Friends

“If you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.” – Thomas Jefferson

Making friends is like finding a boyfriend.  It’s not easy.  Especially if you’re looking for a good friend & you’re not a smoking hot professional cheerleader.

Making Friends

Like a boyfriend, you can date a lot of people & be pretty happy, but finding that one good one is hard.    Same with friends.  You can have a lot of them, but finding those really good friends that you love like family is hard to find.

I’ve never been the girl with a long list of friends. I wouldn’t be the one with 20 bridesmaids or 1,000 people at my wedding.   There’s a huge part of me that has always been envious of those people.  They were able to cultivate friendships from high school & college that stayed with them their whole lives.  I love that & am honestly impressed & a little envious…

I’m the one that could stay at home 99% of my life, only to go get food & walk my precious angel dog, but other than that I’m good to go at home.  I remember the one thing that hurt my feelings the most, from 2 of my ex boyfriends, was when they said I don’t have any friends.  AH!  In context, it wasn’t meant to hurt my feelings, it was immature boys trying to get away with hanging out with their single friends all the time, which I can understand – but hearing them tell me I have no friends was so fucking embarrassing.  Because it was a little true.  Since then, I’ve done better at making friends & am now a little more outgoing, because I have to be… But if you have no friends, don’t worry. I’ve apparently been there, twice.

Making Friends

So, meeting people has always been something I work at.  I’ve been super lucky in the sense that I’ve had a few really  awesome friendships in my life that showed me how important friendships are.  Some helped me grow, some challenged me, some helped me worry less, some helped me be more confident, some taught me a lesson.   Because of how much each friendship helped shape me, I know the value good friendships have.

The whole reason I’m putting this post together is because I started hearing people talk about friendships.  Maintaining friendships that were once strong but are going through change.  Looking for new friends that are easy to be around & share similar values.  Keeping or making friends that have similar interests come Friday night.  And simply the cycle of friendships.  It’s a weird topic to bring up because we’re adults & how do you start talking about friends? Sounds elementary.

When we’re kids we have friends that like to play hop scotch & jump rope together.  That’s pretty easy.  But when we’re older, shit gets a little more complicated than jumping rope.  In a good way, you get to actually talk.  Have interesting conversations.  Build each other’s character.  But everyone is growing into their own lifestyle, opinions, locations, and families.

 Making Friends

Because friends are similar to boyfriends, I think they should be treated the same way.  You have to work hard to find the good ones, and then work to maintain them.  Sitting inside, living within your routine, won’t bring new people into your lives.   That doesn’t happen.  You have to be available, by getting yourself out there.

And once you find a really awesome human being that you get to call a friend, you have to make sure to maintain the friendship.  Give. Appreciate. Listen. Evolve.

Right?

And let a relationship have it’s cycle.  Maybe it’ll go up & down. Someone’s busy, or going through a phase, or growing apart – Let that happen for a little while.  It’ll come around.   (That’s for friends, not boyfriends HA!)

What I figured out was that you can’t get comfy.  You have to work at getting outside your routine & what’s normal.  And like I said in my Money post, this doesn’t mean go out & spend money.  Go for a walk, go to the park, go to the beach, go  on a hike… Get creative!  You don’t have classrooms with new students each semester, so you have to get your ass out there & open up to finding people.

 Making Friends

As much as I would love to say Wafiq, my mom, and my dog are the only friends I need – I realize without good friends we’re still missing a whole other element to living.  So don’t get stuck with you dog, or cats, or partners.  Even though I would die a happy person & be very comfortable that way, I know there’s more!

Making friends sucks, but having friends makes it worth it.  Take on the week ready to mingle like you’re single!  Or maybe you’re both, get your boyfriends & friends all in one week!

Have a fabulous new day & be thoughtful,

Xx

The Best Sports Bra to Hold In Your Ting Tangs

Did You Know? Women simply don’t have the genetic potential to develop bulky muscles. They don’t have sufficient amounts of testosterone — the hormone largely responsible for the development of muscle bulk.

( v i a )

If you’ve ever struggled finding a good sports bra that isn’t $1,000 then you’ll understand this post.  I played sports a lot when I was younger and have always enjoyed running or working out so a sports bra is an essential part of my closet.  I don’t care if they’re cute,  I care that they hold my ting tangs still.  I HATED the times I’d be wearing a bra that wasn’t strong enough & my ting tang’s bounced around for everyone to see during my runs.  UGH, also so unflattering. Oooga Oooga Oooga. Just no. No. No.

Victoria Secret sports bra

Classic Black (HERE) // Pretty Nude (HERE) // Zip Front (HERE)

This reminds of the time Wafiq & I were hiking this very popular hill in Los Angeles and we saw this woman we nicknamed: “Dagger Tits”.

She came plowing down the hill, full speed ahead.  Super athletic, marine woman – confident.  Wearing a very little, ocean blue, Yoga style, triangle bra covering each of her areolas.  Unfortunately, her small breasts went up & down so severely it was if they were each a gun being shot off in an old western stand-off.  Pew pew pew pew!  Cutting the air like a sharp blade.  Pointed. Up, then down, then up! Then down.  We cringed in pain.  We may lose a breast here.  That is one of the many moments I can use to advocate the importance of a strong sports bra.

Anyways, I doubted the Victoria’s Secret sports bras for a long time because they’re cute, they claim to be “push ups, and VS is not known as an athletic company.  Not the formula for nailing down the chest.

Until recently when I needed new sports bras & I was totally unhappy with what I had.  I knew there had to be better & I could only hope at an affordable price…

Because I found this Victoria’s Secret sports bra for $35 I thought – fuck it.  Why not give it a try, better than spending tons of money on another one that might not even work.

Well, lets thank the heavens because this bad boy holds your ting tangs STILL.  And the bra is cute, comfortable, AND affordable!  I went back the next day & bought 3 more.  I’m not sure what girls with little chesties will think, I’m sure that’s an entire different situation – but if you want something to hold everything in, this is it!

Side note, the bra’s with the clips on the back like this one: HERE, can dig into your back a little if you’re doing something laying down.  Not awful but if you’re sensitive, take that into consideration.  Don’t worry, there’s also options where the bra clips in the front, like this one: HERE.

If you’re having trouble staying motivated for your work outs try buying some new workout gear that you’re excited to wear.  It sounds silly but really makes a difference.  It makes you really want to get out there & work hard! Feel good.  Look good. Workout good.

That’s it for my Monday!  Off to celebrate my dog learning to fetch me her Kong for peanut butter treats! OUI!

Have a great day, and be thoughtful,

Xx

“Be Like Garth Brooks” – 5 Tips For Being Positive

“Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn’t arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I’m going to be happy in it.”

~ Groucho Marx

I’m not a super fan of country music or even Garth Brooks music so don’t be afraid I’m going to lay out all my country obsessions for you.   A few weeks ago I was able to see Garth Brooks in concert during SXSW. I’m not familiar with his music, I realized at all, but that didn’t matter.

Being-Postive(3)

Garth Brooks had the most incredibly positive attitude I’ve ever seen in concert, and in life.  Happy, laughing, loving, humble.  Whether or not that’s how he lives his life doesn’t matter to me because the energy during the concert radiated through everyone watching, even if you didn’t know his music.  And what a gift to give that feeling.

I want to make people feel like Garth Brooks does.

And you should too.

Why not make people feel good?  Why not give them a positive day?  We’re able to do that.  It takes worrying less about OURSELVES & more about our surroundings.  Even if Garth Brooks was having a shitty day he was able to be positive enough for his audience to feel good, and I imagine that attitude can also change his shitty day into a good one.

And it wasn’t only via music, which can also make you feel a certain type of way.  The happy feelings came from him, his energy, his conversation, his appreciation, the way he treated his band, his overall attitude.

We can all be like Garth Brooks you guys.  Imagine walking around, making everyone feel like they’re going to have a great day?

 Being Positive

There were two Uber drivers that did the same thing for me.  I had a 5 minute interaction with them but my entire day changed.  I still remember each of them, our conversation, and the feeling I had when I got out of the Uber.  And I’m not typically someone that loves conversating with Uber drivers (*cough*cough* Wafiq).

If you’ve ever met this type of person, it’s something you shouldn’t forget.  Take notes.  Because these people instantly make you feel comfortable, they have such a gift!  I imagine they lead a really positive life, always seeing the glass half full, and because that’s their lives it radiates in their everyday interactions. Every single time I run into these people I desperately want to pay it forward.

I consider myself a positive person, but I want to do better.  I want people to leave conversations with me, feeling my energy.  Feeling the positivity.  This is also why it’s so important to keep negative people away. How can you stay positive when you constantly have people with a negative attitude around you?

Being Positive

5 Tips For Being ‘The Positive Guy’

  1. Treat People Well:   Garth Brooks adored the hell out of his band.  He took plenty of time to showcase each member of his band & their talents, hobbies, attitudes, and families.  It feels good to see people treat people good.  Simple.   When you see a husband treat his wife with respect, love, priority & care – you feel good.  You know what I mean?  To be around others that treat “their peeps” well, gives you positive energy as well. It makes you want to treat your peeps the same way.

  2. Smile:  This is very easy & something I make an effort to do.  Mostly because one time I was at the lounge in The W waiting for the bathroom and these two extremely gorgeous girls walked by glaring at me & I felt so upset afterwards.  What did I do?!  When I came out of the bathroom I asked Wafiq to make sure I’m always smiling.  Even to the meanies.  I don’t want to glare at people or look sad or angry – I want to look happy & positive.  Trust me, it makes a big difference. Those girls went from 10’s to 2’s real quick.

  3. Pick your people:  Like I said, being around negative people makes it a constant challenge to remain positive.  As easy as positive energy can make you feel positive, negative energy can do the same.  Surround yourself with positive people & you’ll see how easy it is to be positive yourself. And if you don’t have any friends, or positive people in your life right now – keep searching until you find them 🙂

  4. Don’t Play Victim:  A hard one for everyone!  And similar to my Listening Post.  Nothing errks me more than people who are constantly trying to make you feel sorry for them.  Don’t be that person.  Don’t project YOUR stress from work, money, relationship, life onto other people.  Think about others.  Every single person has their own struggles & battles.  You’re not unique.  You’re not special.  Unfortunately, we’re all going through something we could bitch about.  So, be grateful for what you have, act like you are, and send that energy out into the world – even if you had a  bad day.

  5. Let Go:  I’m always preaching this one to Wafiq & I happen to think it’s something I’ve mastered in the past year or so…  If you have a bad day, bad situation, bad conversation, woke up late, car broke down, ran out of money or anything else that sucks big time – Let. It. Go.  None of that shit really matters in the whole scheme of things.  Time is going to pass by and you’ll never remember it happening.  So don’t let it effect the people around you, because that can ruin someone’s day, and it’s not worth it.  The important thing is to let it go, deal with it and forget it.  Don’t let it seep into conversations, your attitude, your energy, your smiles.  LET IT GO.  I think this is the hardest for most people, but I would argue the most important.

 Being Positive

Whenever Wafiq or myself starts having a little negative moment we’re quick to say: “Be like Garth Brooks”.  LOL!  Better than saying: “You’re being an asshole”.  Right?!  Whatever works guys.

Being positive sounds normal & easy but it’s a lifestyle. And a choice you have to make everyday.  You either live with the intention to be positive or not, so lets work on it! Let’s make people feel good!  Why not?!

Be like Garth Brooks today & as always, be thoughtful

College. Don’t Do It!

Did You Know?  Student loan debt is the second highest form of debt in the U.S., second only to mortgages. Around 75% of student loan borrowers have delayed buying a home because of their debt & over 40% of borrowers have delayed starting a family because of their debt.

( v i a )

COLLEGE – DON’T DO IT!

Let me explain.

Going-To-College

As I was growing up, teachers, parents, grandparents, cousins, graduates, & friends all stressed the importance of having good grades to get into a good college after high school.  That was the only option for anyone who wanted to be successful.   That’s why we worked so hard in high school, so we can go to college.  Because who doesn’t know what they want to do with their entire life at 18 years old?  And if you didn’t know, you can take classes until you find out.  “If you don’t go now, you’ll never go back!”

I’m not sure how this path was drilled in everyone’s mind because it doesn’t make sense to me.  I think for the generation before mine, college carried more significance than it does now.  It actually meant something to have a general, liberal arts, communication degree.  At least you had a degree on your resume.   And because it meant so much then, it only makes sense that you wouldn’t want to miss out on it now.

But times have changed.

Going To College

After graduating college & applying for real life jobs, all the openings required several years of experience.  A degree didn’t matter, they wanted someone who has been in the field for years.   Searching through job applications today is the same story: experience, experience, experience.  When I met with a job recruiter, about a year ago, she sat down to look at my resume & saw my degree listed on the weeee bottom line & asked if I actually received it, when I said yes, she replied “Ok, I’m just asking because if you didn’t we can just take it off… It’s not a big deal.”

Big deal?! My family & I just paid 1 million fucking dollars for this degree at the weee bottom of my resume & you’re saying it’s not a big deal if I leave it off?!

I wasn’t surprised.  I already knew the degree wasn’t what employers were looking for, but hearing her confirm my thoughts stabbed me in the gut.  Not only was I hoping the million dollar degree would help me land a job, but I was assuming I would also find a job that would make the money spent on school worth it.

Going To College

College WAS the best decision of my life. It paved the way for my future.  Not because of the education, but the choice to leave home & grow up.  I went from shy to strong.  From self-conscious to confident.  From scared to brave.  From 1 friend to 3.   I consider it the best & most important decision I made so far in my life.

But the truth is, I thought that was the only option for me to go out on my own.  I thought it was college or stay home.  So I had to make the move to college, because it was the only option & I’m glad I did.

That’s also why I wanted to share this post, because there are other options.    All the money you’re going to spend on college could be invested in yourself.  Your own business or ideas.  Travel.  Experience. Life. Work.

Going To College

I went into college, failed fucking math & took the Communication degree.  Here’s the deal, I didn’t know shit about finances or business so math was impossible.  These days, I’m reading books about money, entrepreneurs, taxes, business – all things I wish I would’ve studied in college because now I actually relate to them.  I can understand them beyond just taking a class & simply digesting information.

I don’t think college is smart.  I talk a lot of shit about college.  But, if you know you want a career as a doctor, or scientist or engineer then you need college to fulfill your career.  You can’t follow that path without the education.  BUT, if you question your choice whatsoever or don’t know what you want to do, why go spend a ton of money on a path you’re uncertain of?  Take time off to work, travel & learn about yourself.  Move to a different state.  Take an easy going job that you enjoy.  Party.  Date. Order a ton of books off Amazon & start educating yourself for .99 cents.  (because Amazon is the shit like that).

Then, when you’re older, and happily have a savings account without millions in student loan debt, and you know what you want to do & how to get there – go back to school.  If that’s the path.  School’s not going anywhere & maybe someday it’ll actually be affordable.

Going To College

I should also mention, in other countries the college degree holds a very high significance.  They don’t care what degree it is as long as you have one.  I noticed that in Dubai, so as soon as I was regretting that expensive piece of paper I did have a moment of gratitude, otherwise I don’t know if I would’ve been able to work while abroad.  Do I consider the degree worth it for my stint in Dubai? Not really.  But it doesn’t make me feel as bad about the whole situation either.

There are SO many ways to be successful without college today.  Education is at our fingertips in more affordable & accessible ways than ever before.   If I’m the only person that’s saying this, then I’m glad to do so.  You DO NOT have to go to college after high school.  You are likely smarter than the people who do.

Have I fallen off my rocker or are you with me? Thoughts?

Welcome to April! Go out, skip school & be thoughtful!

Xx

Life Chat: Meeting Nick from New Girl

Did You Know? When Tim Allen was 25 years old he was arrested in Michigan after he was found to be in possession of 1.43 pounds of Cocaine.

( v i a )

Hey everybody!!

 Austin Texas

What are we up to?!  I’ve been doing my best to engage in SXSW activities.  Wafiq & I always love how cool Austin feels during this time.

Last weekend we were walking around when it was rainy and cold, all the streets downtown were bustling with people & we both immediately felt like we were in another city.  So alive & streets filled with people, not to mention the cooler weather & rain made us feel like we were on vacation… Yes, rain and cold weather makes us feel like we’re on vacation, lived too many years in desert weather!

 Austin Texas

We walked by the SXSW red carpet outside the Paramount Theater & noticed a premiere was showing.  I’m not sure what the movie was BUT, Nick from New Girl was there.

We had an excited moment as we walked by & both excitedly said “It’s Nick! It’s Nick!”.  There were people with their phones out & he was pretty open to talking or saying hi to his fans but as we walked away I realized I didn’t like seeing him.  I don’t want to meet Nick.

Meeting an actor takes away from their character, of which I love!  For example, I want Nick to be Nick – but he isn’t & if I met him I would realize that.  Wafiq & I will forever consider that man to be: NICK. Period.   So he may too busy to talk to us, but we’re too committed to his character to meet the real him.

 Austin Texas

There’s one more weekend left for us to go out (and avoid favorite actors) so we’ll see what we can get into.

We’re currently having perfect weather that hasn’t heated up too much & I’m pretty grateful to enjoy it while I can.

And as much as I would love to say I’m loving the sunshine staying out so late now that we’ve had daylight savings time, it’s really kicking my ass in the mornings.  I don’t remember this being a problem before?!  I was used to getting out of bed easily for Yoga every morning but all of a sudden I feel like I’m still in REM sleep when my alarm goes off…

 Austin Texas

PS.  I’m probably the first person in history to admit this, but I’m a complete fuck up when it comes to my essential oil diffuser.  It smells like something is on fire?! And I’m 90% sure something is, so I stopped using it. That lasted a whole 7 days.  Am I missing something?!

Ok, off to read Sandcastle Kings – a book about Jesus.  We’ll see.

As always, be thoughtful…

Beauty, I recommend...

Amazon Beauty Fav: Tepezcohuite Cream

Did you know?  Customer service first – Amazon employees, including CEO Bezos, spend two days every two years working at the customer service desk. ( v i a )

Since discovering Amazon Prime I’ve been focused on finding the best of Amazon.  A friend of mine brags about never having to go to the store because she buys EVERYTHING off Amazon.  I’m no where near that, but it’s definitely goals.

She told me she buys all of her make up on Amazon, which…No.  Don’t believe.  Because how amazing would that be? Instead of torturing myself by going into the actual stores (not a huge fan).

tepez-cream-amazon-beauty

One of my favorite finds so far is the Natural Green Brand Tepezochuite Cream.  I’ve tried a lot of the “Top Beauty” products that Amazon offers & have honestly not been overly impressed (if you’re curious about those let me know).  But as far as what I have liked & will be reordering, this moisturizer is at the top of my list.

And unlike most face products, I actually know & can pronounce pretty much every single ingredient in this product – all the way to the bottom of the ingredient list.

The first 3 ingredients are: Distilled water, Grapseed Oil, and Rice Bran Oil.  I’ll take it!

Typically, the only product I feel confident using on my face is Coconut oil, as you may remember, but this moisturizer doesn’t cause weird reactions either, which is a pleasant surprise.

I’ve concluded oils are my thing, the more oil the better. Oui.

For the curious – I first heard about this product scrolling through Pinterest, apparently Salma Hayek made an entire skincare line because she didn’t see this popular Mexican ingredient used anywhere in American products.

“Tepezecohuite is a bark tree found in Southern Mexico that resembles a fern.  It was administered by the Mayan culture thousands of years ago to treat skin lesions such as burns, by grinding the bark up into a powder. In 1984, after a horrific gas explosion in Mexico City killed 500 and left more than 5000 with severe burns, the Red Cross treated the burn patients with tepezcohuite. It was so effective at healing their wounds and regenerating the skin that a year later, when an earthquake caused a series of explosions and fires, tepezcohuite was again used to treat victims.”  ( v i av i a : )

And a little goes a long way.  If you’re on the hunt for a natural, easy face product & prefer shopping Amazon – here you go!

What are your Amazon favorites?  Trying to find the best of the best 🙂

Have a great week & be extra thoughtful ~

Everything Happens For A Reason

“Sometimes God will inconvenience you in order to help somebody else. Instead of getting frustrated when our plans don’t work out, we need to remember that it’s not all about us. Maybe God has you there on purpose to let your light shine. He’s counting on you to be a good influence on someone else.” – Joel Osteen

  Joel Osteen Quote

I read this quote online months ago & it’s popped in my mind on almost a daily basis since then.  I don’t follow Joel Osteen (a friend of mine reposted it on FB), and I’m not suuuper religious, but I translated this quote to apply to me.

I find it pretty spectacular how certain words, music, or art can leave such lasting impressions.  Especially because -how many quotes a day do we scroll through on FB, Instagram, Pinterest & whatever else…

For something to stick, is a big deal. And this one stuck.

I am THE believer in the saying: “Everything happens for a reason”.  No matter what I go through & then look back at – it always makes sense.  Always.  Every instinct I have, moving away, changing, jobs, new friends, relationships, decisions I religiously believe happens for a reason & that’s what I use as motivation not to question myself too much.

Having that belief also helps me worry less.  When I make what appears to be a large decision to most people (moving to Dubai before ever seeing it), I have loads of confidence in my decision because I know that’s what I feel is my next step  – and it’s happening for a reason.

When I get to Dubai, and am having an experience that is nothing like I imagined, I have in the back of my mind that it’s happening to me for a reason.  That keeps me calm.  Okay with the process.  But eager to figure out “why”.  The lightbulb moment.

The problem I noticed, and how this quote changed my mind a little, is that sometimes something that happens isn’t for ME.  Or for YOU.  It happened for someone else.  The explanation might not be there for me to see.

To help this make sense – I was always so concerned and now realizing selfish, waiting to see how each decision would play out and how it would benefit ME.  What the hell is that?!  (Writing this down is making me embarrassed.)

Everything happens for a reason, but that benefit might not apply to me.  I always thought: “Oh that happened to me so I could meet so-and-so” “Ohhhh that happened to me so I would leave my work place” “Ohh that happened to me so I could learn confidence”

Hopefully I’m making sense.

After glancing past this quote I realized I had it wrong.. for pretty much ever.  Everything does happen for a reason,  still faithfully believe that, however that reason might not always be – to benefit ME.

Maybe my light was shinning & it was needed to shine somewhere else.  Maybe I needed to be a complete fail so someone else could realize their life doesn’t suck as bad. HA!

But hello?! DUH!

After I started thinking this way, nearly every day for the past 6 months or so, it’s almost as if the pressure has been taken off of ME.  Because it’s not all about me.  It’s about all of us.

I know, I’m deep.

You can imagine, I’ve had months of thinking about this and it’s all coming out.  But the whole thought changed a lot of my mindset and has influenced my decisions & reactions the past couple months, so I thought it was worth sharing.

Because it’s a bit of a relief.

Thoughts?

Xx

A Trip Down Memory Lane – MissBassmaster Favs

One of the coolest parts about blogging, especially travel blogging, is being able to look back at your own writing & experiences.  Recently, I’ve been trying to clean up my old posts to make a more cohesive MissBassmaster.  In doing so I’ve stumbled upon some awesome posts.  Damnnnnnnnnnnnn Katie, round of applause!   I keep trying to remember where I was writing, what I was thinking & how I was really feeling.  I must have done a good job of conveying my emotion at the time because re reading particular posts brings me right back to the same feelings I had.

At the time I remember genuinely believing no one reads blogs so I was writing to the air – but I’m glad I did!

For anyone new to MissBassmaster, or looking for a good trip down memory lane, here are a few of my personal favs:

Olive Oil + Hair

Ha!  What you’ll do when you have no money & nowhere to be.  This particular post was still in the beginning stages of Dubai when I had major self esteem issues, hense the drama.  I remember it like it was yesterday… Feeling so proud to have a head full of grease and smelling like a frying pan. Aww.

I’m Here. Hi. / BOOM It’s My Birthday

I’m Here. Hi.  Is probably my shortest post but it’s the sweetest.  I can tell the hard times are finally behind me & I was myself again, reading this simple post put a huge smile on my face. I finally made it!  And BOOM It’s My Birthday?  Ummmm hello happiness, good to see you again!

My Dumb Idea to Try the Master Cleanse

Because this is freaking hilarious.  I will forever remember this cleanse & my conversations w/Wafiq during this time.  Since doing the cleanse & writing those posts I’ve heard a tooooooooon of negativity towards juice cleanses & restricting diets.  I would like to take this opportunity to make it clear – I was doing the cleanse as an experiment.  I didn’t know if it was good, bad, or ugly – I was bored & wanted to see if a cleanse like this was survivable, shoot me.

Myth Busting Dubai

Awwwww finally learning to defend Dubai.  This is one of my favorites because it’s so true to Dubai!!  I always say, I’m totally open to talking negatively about Dubai or really anywhere else in the world, as long as you know what you’re saying.  Facts & education, or I might as well be talking to a fucking wall.  If you want to answer some questions about life in Dubai, or the Middle East – read this.

My Fellow American’s in Dubai

I never write posts like this anymore!  Truly one of a kind – a story on MissBassmaster.  How hilarious are my fellow American’s in Dubai, and I remember working so hard at portraying each character in the pictures.  HA!

Finally Back in Austin, Texas!

I forgot how hard this was – culture shock in general was super heavy for me.  And it took almost a full year to get over it.  Only NOW am I comfortable talking and explaining Dubai to people.  That took forever! This post was written so perfectly to reflect my feelings.  Anyone struggled with culture shock?  I wasn’t ready…

EEEEEEEE!! That’s my trip down memory lane!  I haven’t gone through ALL my old posts, those are the ones that stuck out & I found to be a good read going back.  If you really pay attention you’ll see my ups and downs were a little roller coaster-y.    Any other bloggers notice that in their writing?   I’m going to try to maintain a more “up” feeling going forward, jeeeeez Katie.

I know I always say it, but I’m so so so super grateful for where I am now 🙂

Have a light day & remember to be thoughtful!!

Xx

I recommend..., Style, What I Wore

Affordable Office Outfit Series: Target

Let’s be real, working at a desk in an office with a tiny window, doesn’t exactly feel like a fashion runway.  The last thing anyone working inside an office wants to do is spend ANY money on office clothes.  Ew…  My friends & I discuss the cheapest ways & places to buy office clothes and not look like we’re wearing items from high school.

Affordable Office Outfit from Target

Because how completely boring to spend a ton of money on items only the creepy dude that comes in once a week will see? Not ideal.

For the next 3 weeks I’m going to give you a conservative, realistic outfit from super affordable, accessible stores to help complete your weekly office uniform – for cheap!  I say office uniform w/confidence.  You only need a couple major pieces to wear throughout each week.  No need to have a huuuuuuge variety, stick to basic essentials & accessorize from there to mix it up.

Also, I KNOW you’re no basic bitch.  This is simply the reality of the situation.  I know after work in your athleisure, then cocktail hour outfits – you’re a hard 10 in your lululemon’s & tiny black dresses.  I’m there with you, but office walls won’t see you and that’s where the skimping needs to happen.  I say skimping hesitantly, these outfits may be affordable, but I think they’re still good for after office activities when necessary.

Office Outfit Number One: Target.

This black dress can transition you from summer to fall to winter.  Black never goes out of style & always looks professional no matter the price point.  As it gets cooler, pair it with tights, then a scarf, and eventually big winter jackets & boots.

Below are 4 different ways to change up this ONE black dress – all affordable and available at Target 😉

Affordable-Office-Clothes,-Target

Main Piece:  Black Dress & Nude Purse

Accessorize to change up the look:

1. Watch / Shoes

2. Watch (similar) / Tights / Shoes

3. White Blazer / Shoes / Tights / Watch

4. Scarf / Shoes / Watch (similar)

Toooooo easy! Plus it’s super comfortable & can easily transition through the seasons… Layer it with different jackets, shoes, tights, scarves and accessories as the cooler months role in and it’ll look like you’re buying a new dress every week.

Oui. Oui.

Xx.
