MissBassmaster Book Club | june ’19
I didn’t see this post coming, I never thought I’d be able to knock out enough books to make an interesting conversation. But here we are! Believe it or not, when push comes to shove, I can make some of my goals happen.
I put it out there in the universe that I wanted to read more & I finally got myself into a good habit. I pushed all the excuses away & simply started. As you’ll see I read any & all types of books. I don’t stick to one genre because I worry that’ll bore me & I’ll drop my reading habit because of it. I try to alternate large books with quick reads & mental health with storytelling. I recommend it!
Another thing, I don’t limit myself to popular, NEW release books. Some of the old ones are gold mines & also incredibly affordable. You can buy them used on Amazon for like $3. And in a few weeks, the popular ones will be brushed aside & affordable too.
I tried to share my honest thoughts about all the books, rather than suggest them. You can decide if the book is for you!

The Magnolia Story by Chip & Joanna Gaines (HERE):
Let me start by saying, I’ve never seen Chip & JoAnna’s show, I received this book as a gift. The book shares how Chip & Joanna met & their relationship journey, which surprisingly ties in with their businesses & the evolution to what it is today. I would have never guessed this would be an absolute favorite of mine, I was completely blown away. I think it’s an exceptional book for anyone in a RELATIONSHIP. I’m encouraging Wafiq to read it & I would suggest any couples do the same. But, not just couples! The business advice & life risks described are incredibly inspiring. Highly recommend!
Sisters First by Jenna Bush Hager & Barbara Pierce Bush (HERE):
I’ve seen Jenna Bush (daughter of former President George Bush) on the Today show a few times & her personality makes me happy, that simple. Jenna & Barbara switch storytelling experiences in their lives through chapters. If you have a sister, you’ll really be able to connect. I liked the way it made a presidential family relatable. I personally wish it would have gone a stitch deeper, I felt like it was a little surface level & I like to uncover the spiders in the garage. Either way, easy read & fast.
Becoming by Michelle Obama (HERE):
WTF. This book rocked me. I put it down & bitched about it after a few chapters because I thought it was too PG & slow. BUT, I regret everything I said. Michelle Obama you guys is a hero. I love her. I want to say, I don’t even think I voted during Barack Obama’s presidential run. I wasn’t even in the country, so maybe that’s why I’m not connected to his presidency. I did NOT read the book because I’m obsessed w the family. I saw how many people loved the Obama’s & I wanted to see why, so I picked up her book. If you can get through the first few chapters, you won’t be able to put it down. She has to lay down the foundation of her upbringing so you can fully understand her views once she becomes First Lady. (*Spoiler, her & Barack went to therapy at one point??) You guys, freaking incredible, shockingly HONEST story. Once again Michelle Obama is proving to me that WOMEN truly are the superheroes of the planet earth. Sorry Mr. Barack Obama, but your wife is the real shining star here.
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (HERE):
Do you want to know about life in a cute little story? You’ll finish the Alchemist in one day. I’ve seen this book on every book list that ever existed so I needed to knock it out, and like an OMEN it landed in my hands when my friend asked me to pass it along to another friend. I took advantage of the situation & read it in one day, now Wafiqs trying to breeze through it. Personally, I think a lot of humankind NEEDS to read & reflect on this book. And dig deep inside themselves so they live a fulfilled life. Sounds cheesy? It’s literally the reason we’re alive.
Settle for More by Megyn Kelley (HERE):
Ok wait, I learned of Megyn Kelley & read her book before she got fired from her recent TV Show. I wanted to figure out what a super gorgeous blonde, with a family, on Fox News had to say. How she grew up. Who she was. And I have to admit, I absolutely loved this book. I especially love her writing style, I know that sounds weird but once you read it you’ll understand. I was inspired to pick up a few writing tips from her. Yet another true powerhouse woman you guys. Think what you want about her, but damn, I love a strong, opinionated woman. I find myself defending her now? And from her own voice, and her own book, I think she genuinely means very well.
The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown (HERE):
If you want a short version of the therapy I’ve been through the last 2 years, this book is for you. There is A LOT of information squeezed into a little book, you can get through it quickly. I will say, you could literally spend a week working on each paragraph in the book. If you’re very serious about your mental health but don’t want to spend money on therapy, or maybe just started your therapy journey, take this book slow & try to work through little parts at a time. Lots of value here.
She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb (HERE):
Ha! I put this book down & bitched about it A LOT (common theme for me). How can it be on so many “amazing” book lists when it’s soooo negative?? What’s happening here?? I persisted, I’m not one to stop something half way. All I have to say is, I cried on the last page. A happy cry. And I never cry reading books.
Alright, I’m already cruising through my next books! There’s so much value that books have, every single time I’m done reading one I am reminded of their importance. Especially a good one. Let me know if you have any book recs below OR if you’ve read any of the above, I’d love to hear what you think!
Have a great weekend, talk soon
Be thoughtful
Xx
