What Makes You Happy?

It’s still the beginning of the year, a lot of people are either setting their goals or reviewing them.  I asked someone this question recently after talking for awhile: What makes you happy?

You should be able to answer that.

(Buckle in, I’m diving deep today.)

What-Makes-You-Happy

When we’re growing up we often get asked: “what do you want to be when you grow up?”.   I think I wanted to work at the movie theater serving popcorn for many of my little years.  I was excited!  At some point, I wanted to be an interior designer and then a commercial real estate agent.

When we’re older & we have those jobs, there’s still one more question we should be asking:

What makes you happy?

BECAUSE, what we realize, is that for a lot of us our jobs don’t make us happy every day.  We’re working to make money.  Right?  And maybe we like our jobs.  But does our job give us that deep down fulfillment & happiness that’s honest & exciting?  Probably not… Of course, some people are happy while they’re working in their careers.  They found it, they’re the lucky ones.

For the sake of protecting my point, let’s not worry about the lucky ones today.

Let’s focus on what makes you happy.  REALLY FUCKING HAPPY.  A long term, everyday type of happiness.  Not a quick fix, not a chocolate chip cookie.  Something lasting.  For example, eating a chocloate chip cookie may not be what I’m talking about here but if you’re someone who loves perfecting the cookie recipe every single day or creating new versions of it, that could be your true happiness.

For me, I love having this website & creating.  I absolutely love writing to be specific, I always have.  No matter what my day to day activities are for other jobs, I know my happy place is sitting down & creating.  And this space is always here for me.  At this moment in time, asking me what makes me happy is easy to answer.  I also have a friend overseas that is my happiness, working with her to figure out ways for her to earn money is my happiness.  Making sure my dog is happy every single day of her life is my happiness.  Creating time for Wafiq & I to enjoy something simple together every day is also my happiness.

Here’s the thing, I didn’t always have an answer to that question myself.  This year, I realized I don’t think a lot of people do.  They don’t have that specific thing that makes them happy every single day.

I want you to know what makes you happy. & find time for it every day.  I think for a lot of us, that happiness comes from a healthy hobby.  What makes you happy will likely easily translate into what your hobby is.  Something you don’t get sick of.  We should all be able to have that, and if we don’t – we need to find it, and figure it out.   Be able to easily answer the question, what makes you happy?

If you don’t even KNOW what exactly gives you that daily, healthy, fulfilled feeling of happiness how do you know what you want?  How do you know what to ask for?  What goals to set?  What to work for?  What to dream about?

Even if you had indisposable amounts of money, what will make you happy then?  Figuring out what makes you happy is STILL important, even when you have no money OR all the money in the world.

If you can’t answer that question, it won’t matter what circumstances you find yourself in, I don’t know how you’ll feel good.  How you’ll feel fulfilled… or ultimately, happy.

I thought this was an important question to bring to your attention now because it’s the month of setting goals and working to fulfill them, but if you can’t answer the simple question – what makes you happy?  Then what are your goals for?

Right?

SO get to work on figuring that out! No matter how small, big, simple or complicated – it’s an important question.  If you’re feeling brave, share what makes you happy below.  Why not share something fun 🙂

Love you, be thoughtful

Xx
