5 Closet Essentials – to get you out the door!
Did You Know? A retired sergeant from the US Marines, that has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, has been invigorated by an unexpected field: archaeology. Stephen Humphreys, a former U.S. Air Force aircraft maintenance officer, heads up the archaeology program for US Veterans “I realized that archaeology digs really bring people together,” he said. “You build this fantastic sense of community that’s really centered around this mission. … I thought there were a lot of parallels between that and my military service.” (via)
I’ve been trying to stack my closet w basics! I’ve been so busy lately but don’t want to compromise my food or style… SO BASICS make it easy to keep everything running biz as usual. I don’t like feeling “off” so it’s important that all parts stay in sync. Adjustments made, sails keep sailing!
(& you thought I was sticking to food w my basics, should I do makeup too? Hmm)
There’s a few things we need in your closet to keep things efficient when you’re friggen busy. The goal? Feel like a fashion icon when you don’t want to spend more than .356 seconds thinking of your outfit in the morning. I picked the following 5 essential closet items because you can wear them all together for an easy, classic look OR start w 1 piece & easily build from there. It’s totally up to you! I’m in the process of clearing out my closet (that’s actually a forever x ever process) so I was able to really dig in & determine what are the most essential things to have. The 5 ULTIMATE MUSTS. Now, I’ve reordered 10 versions of each so I can repeat ,repeat, repeat. Mix x Match.
5 CLOSET ESSENTIALS
Good denim is absolutely an essential. You might not realize this until you own a good pair of jeans. Nice denim is versatile & classic. You can pull together an outfit for any event with a perfect pair of denim. A straight leg, high waist, black jean is what I consider an essential. No holes or rips, keep it classic. That way you’re able to dress them up or down. I’m committed to (these). Try and try again to find your perfect pair. It’s worth the investment & time. This might be a good place to point out, my go-to denim has NO STRETCH! Surprise, that’s almost impossible to find when you’re shopping around. The reason? The no stretch jeans keep you sucked in, the denim doesn’t lose form, & the material looks higher quality than most stretch jeans.
2. FITTED TEE
If I had to pick, I’d say a fitted black T is an essential. Black is classy, sexy, slimming, & you literally can never go wrong. Pair a fitted black T with anything & you’re good to go. A bright pink skirt, or a slim denim jean & heels. I prefer a bodysuit so it stays tight & tucked, but even a well fitting T will do the trick. An absolute must. A black T also gives you a little break if something spills on it, lez be honest. (Favorite – black: here / white option: here). I recently ordered from Naked Wardrobe (because J-Lo) and I was v impressed w the quality & fit of the fabrics. They have a ton of bodysuit options if you like that style, check out their website: here
I would argue on behalf of a white little sneaker like (these), but a perfect loafer is a more realistic essential because it can go with any outfit, for any activity. You can dress a neutral loafer up or down. Go for a white, pale pink, or nude loafer so it’ll match anything – v important. This will quickly become your go-to shoe. (Options: here // here.) Although I would argue a nude heel is also an essential, it doesn’t work for everything the same way a closed toe loafer does – so the loafer wins! And you already know about my complete foot coverage situation, so closed toe is most definitely an essential.
A beautiful gold necklace is the perfect detail to wrap up your entire outfit. To really pull it together & make it appear as though you have your fashion shit together. I used to skip dainty jewelry & couldn’t figure out what was missing with my outfits until I started wearing a gold necklace. It’s the missing piece to your outfit puzzle. Trust me on this one! Custom necklaces are popular right now (here/here), but you can always stick to something simple (here).
Because a cardigan adds layer + texture to your outfit & how fun is that? You want a little dimension going on. Not to mention, it’s extremely convenient to have a cozy, pretty cardigan to easily be able to throw on & off when you get a little chilly. Keep it neutral so you can wear it with any outfit! (Options: here / here.)
Trust me when I say – I love vibrant colors, tons of texture, feathers, studs, all the drama when it comes to clothing. Narrowing it down was difficult, but having these basic items make it so easy to get dressed every morning & look tied together. I spent too many years starring at my closet every morning wondering how I could get my bright purple, feathered, Topshop dress to work in the office environment – and don’t think I didn’t try. Basics are the key to quick, easy mornings that will have you feeling powerful all day long! CONFIDENCE is KEY!
What’s your must have closet pieces to get you through the day to day?
Side note, has anyone seen the series Mom on Hulu? Very much binge watching at the moment. Currently 2 seasons in – highly recommend. Have a great weekend!
Be thoughtful,
I love this! Thank for all the great tips! I love your necklace, where did you get it from?
Thanks for reading! I made the necklace in Dubai right before I moved back to the States 🙂
