A little Instagram round up for you this morning! Like I mentioned last month, I want to start an Instagram round-up the last Friday of the month, then all my pictures are in one place – Instagram is all about STORIES now, forget the photos.
I stole this Instagram Round-Up idea from someone else because I loved it. Instagram stories is what Instagram is all about now, the photo’s are a thing of the past. You can deny it if you want to, but I’m speaking truth. I thought this would be a good place to share them. You’re already on the website, meaning you’re invested enough to peek photos + some. {Love you.}
There are 3 questions I get asked all the time: how I was treated as a woman in the middle east, did I feel safe AND “did you have to cover up the whole time”.
I hope I’ve done a good job clarifying, go to this post to see my answers to all 3 of those questions if you haven’t already. (We went to the public beach on this trip & there were girls in thong bikinis & topless tanning, so I think people are comfortable doing whatever they please.)
For me, I wanted to fit in. I wanted to act like I’ve been there before & I know what the fuck I’m doing. There’s something powerful in that. Also, for any destination, isn’t it fun to fit in? Wear what they wear. I think it makes you appear well traveled, like you know what you’re doing in you life. So that was my goal this trip. I stuck to coverage. When I was living there, I pushed this boundary w my cut off shorts & dresses all the time, because I was bored of being covered & it was HOT AF. Being that I was just visiting, I had a different approach this time.
The theme: BLACK BLACK BLACK. If this is the color of your wardrobe, you’re in luck! I like bright colors, florals, sparkles, drama – so I had to go shopping. An abaya & burka are black, so that’s the colors you’ll see a lot of when you’re out. I asked someone why black? Why not beautiful colors + design on the abaya? I was told the original purpose of the abaya was to avoid attention. Bright florals & colors will do the opposite, drawing attention to the people wearing them. So black is the theme!
Wooooooof TA! Austin City Limits music festival beat the crap out of me! Every year I go I hope it’ll be easier, but it never is. I love the music & the break from normal life – but it’s H O T in Texas and that heat can really beat you up.
This festival came right on the heels of the Vegas catastrophe, which you couldn’t help but feel heavy about. My friends & I did our best to not bring it up but that’s hard to do when there’s thousands of people stuffed in on top of each other at a concert. I think that’s how it’s going to be from now on for our generation. It’s hard to honestly say otherwise. We have to live in a place where we’re cautious of our surroundings and listen to our instincts, especially when we’re in large crowds. Unfortunately, that’s where we’re at in America. Boo, all because of those mother fuckers.
One adjustment I noticed this year, I’m not sure if it’s new or just something I’m more aware of, is the huge crane overlooking the festival with police on it. They had a birds eye view of the entire festival and you could see they had huge lenses to see everything happening on the ground. That was about my only piece of mind.
On the 2nd night as Wafiq and I were watching one of the shows, we heard a huge bang come from the other side of the festival. We told ourselves if we hear it again, we’ll leave. Then we heard it again. And again. There were police near us that also looked concerned, as did most of the people around us. To make a long story short, it was pyrographics at the stage on the other side of the festival. I’m thinking (and hoping) this part of live performances will have restrictions in the future. I don’t think it’s worth it to risk confusing a crowd. With our tensions a little higher than we’d like, Wafiq and I decided to leave early that night. Again, we’re at a place where you have to trust your gut on certain circumstances, call us dramatic but I’d rather be the dramatic one all day than the one standing there when/if something happens.
I constantly brag about the incredibly insightful active shooter training I did with our city Fire Marshall – I need to do a whole post on that because it was way more helpful than I imagined it could be.
Hell. Yes. I love the Austin City Limits Music Festival. It comes at the perfect time, the end of the boiling hot Texas Summer. The last hoorah! Some of my favorite things include live music + being outside & the lighthearted energy. (However, not a fan of festival crowds)
There’s a few pieces I’ve stalked & have my eyes on for festival time. The cool part of festivals is that you can get really creative with your clothing… REALLY creative. And no one cares. On my regular run to the Coffee Tea & Bean drive thru on Saturday mornings, I don’t feel as comfortable rolling up w/stick on tattoos & a bikini top. Come festival time, it’s all creativity on deck! OR you can opt to creativity, level 0 and no one cares, that’s the part I love. If I’m feeling red lips or glitter, I’ll happily give it a try. If I’m feeling my pajama shirt & a make up free hippie spirit, I’ll do that too. FREEEEEEDOMMM!! This year for me, I’m sticking to comfort.
If you’ve ever struggled finding a good sports bra that isn’t $1,000 then you’ll understand this post. I played sports a lot when I was younger and have always enjoyed running or working out so a sports bra is an essential part of my closet. I don’t care if they’re cute, I care that they hold my ting tangs still. I HATED the times I’d be wearing a bra that wasn’t strong enough & my ting tang’s bounced around for everyone to see during my runs. UGH, also so unflattering. Oooga Oooga Oooga. Just no. No. No.
I made the mistake of trying to go shopping recently & immediately regretted my decision to skip shopping online… Ughhhh… is anyone else online only?! It’s so much easier than parking at a mall, going into a crowded store, digging around for your size, (and most recently) dealing with the hottest dressing room of all time!
I feel like I’m giving away my biggest secret here… You know I’m obsessed with online shopping, specifically Amazon. I literally buy everything off Amazon, I’m currently waiting for Banana Nut Cliff Bars. When I have conversations with other Amazon addicts I get hot & heavy. Really spikes my heart beat.
