Best of 2016: Findings

Did You Know? This year, 212 million copies of the IKEA catalog were printed in 29 languages and 62 editions. For comparison, that’s more than double the average world sales of the Bible each year. ( v i a )

And my last & final Best of 2016 list is: Random Findings.   Every once and awhile something pops into your life & changes it forever…

Best of 2016 Findings

1. Cravings

Starting with the obvious here, this cookbook allowed me the opportunity to appreciate cookbooks again.  I was a loyal fan of “pinteresting” recipes, but after reading this cookbook I’ve spread my wings and began the exploration of other colorful cookbooks with a hot model on the cover.  I don’t know if Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are so hot that all of a sudden I’m attracted to the steak sauce on pg 72, but it’s happening all the way from the front to the back of this book.  I haven’t tried a recipe that I haven’t fallen in love with, the only caution – calories! Portion control is necessary.

2. Amazon Prime

How/Why/Where/Who am I?! I can’t believe I haven’t discovered the glory that is Amazon Prime until this year!  Amazon Prime is the way cool people use Amazon, for a super small annual fee you can order wonderful amazon products and get 2 day shipping for free!  2 days?!  (I ordered by toothbrushes last night.) I almost skipped Christmas shopping outside my apartment all together thanks to all the glory that is Amazon Prime and I haven’t been to Target in months!  This is where we’re headed people, if you’re not on board now – it’s time.

3. Jazz Music

Jazz is the perfect background noise & has a way of making you feel fancy while sitting in your pajamas, drinking cheap wine, and reading your favorite book.  Need I say more?

4. Camp Gladiator

Camp gladiator is a work out group that I recently joined, they likely have something similar wherever you are. The reason I bring this up is because it’s the one thing that’s helped me consistently be on top of working out.  I’ve always been pretty good at going to the gym or more particularly, running – but in a group fitness camp I feel like I’m held accountable for showing up to workout, to the point where I start having FOMO when I miss one.  If you’re looking to start 2017 in a healthy way and want to stick to it, try a group camp in your area so you’re held accountable to show up.  As hesitant as I’ve been for years to join one, I’m glad I finally did.

5. Betches / My Therapist Says

These two Instagram accounts have saved my existence as an honest human being…  Don’t you love when you start following an Instagram account that clicks with everything you’ve ever felt?  These two accounts have the power to take my anxiety away with their realness and 0 fucks given attitude.  Bless them real hard.

6. Waterproof Phone Case

This summer, I was obsessing over my discovery of this $10 waterproof phone case, but I bought it near the end of the season and barely had time to use it.  I don’t know why everyone doesn’t own a couple of these. Super affordable, easy to use, and great to have on hand for a quick trip to the pool. Eeeeeek Snapchat lovers embrace.

7. NEEDTOBREATHE

I started listening to this band about 2 years ago but really engaged this last year, the music speaks to me!  It’s not too much of one genre.  I feel like if you’re listening to Rap, Jazz, Pop or Rock you’re really committed to that style – where this band feels somewhere in between, making it perfect when there’s people with different preferences together.  And, lucky me I got to see them live this year 🙂

8. Ikea Knives

No, I haven’t fell off my rocker and bumped my head – I can not live without these knives!  How do people cook without them!?  They STAY sharp, SUPER sharp.  And they’re $2!  I’m telling you, I can’t imagine a kitchen without these knives, change your life and buy a (sharp) knife.

That’s it!  All my favorites of the year 2016.  Is it weird I’m already over it, feeling deep into 2017?  Nothing better than a fresh year with a fresh outlook. Other wonderful new things – The Bachelor. I’ll be catching up tonight & feel pretty excited about it – I’m a Nick fan, poor guy needs a wife.

Remember, kick ass and be thoughtful!

Xx

August Monthly Favorites 2016 | MissBassmaster

Mmmmmm nothing like the feeling of Fall right around the corner, but before we leave August I have a couple favorites I’ve been enjoying & want to share. I’ll be carrying these products into the next few months to come.

 MissBassmaster-August-Monthly-Favorites

  1. Under Eye Sheets:  I’ve been trying a lot of eye pads.  Recently, I used some that physically abused my under eye area, nightmare. However, these babies are affordable & hydrating.  I have VERY dry skin so I like cool, moisturizing products & this one does the trick.  They feel wonderful to my under eye area when I’m super tired – I love them.  And they help w/puffiness.

  2. Cravings: Obviously.  All month and prolly a few more to come. Best thing so far – Chrissy’s Mac & Cheese. But for a small Christmas dinner – BTI Whole Roast Chicken & Vegetables.

  3. Pixi Glow Tonic:  I’m not a toner fan, I’ve tried several the past few years & I never finish a bottle.  Always one of those items that I end up skipping in the getting ready process, but Pixi has stuck.  I’m on my 2nd bottle & now I can’t imagine my routine without it.  I’m not sure if there’s a major difference in my actual face, that “glow” may or may not be happening, but I do feel much cleaner wiping Pixi over my fresh face.  I feel like it takes off that extra layer missed when washing – in a very gentle way.  The smell is refreshing too, I love it.  (Anyone else tried?  I first bought it because I read crayyyzee reviews…)

  4. NeedtoBreathe: Another obvious one if you have me on Instagram/snapchat – I can’t stop. This music is so freaking good I wish I heard it years & years & years ago.  Straight out the womb playing “Happiness” would have been ideal. Mom? I’m not a huge Rock person but I love this band, and so does Wafiq so it scores major points for long car rides.  Obsessed is understatement.

I tried a lot the past few months & fell in love with a few. Let me know what your summer favorites have been before we quickly get into fall, it’s creeping hard.

The other day we experienced weather in the 80’s and I had a moment of silence for what’s to come.  I think I’m officially over HOT weather…for life.  I need to start planning to relocate before next summer, Antarctica anyone?

I have a month full of exciting posts coming your way – at least I think so 🙂

Have a great September and be thoughtful!

Xx

Top 5 Everyday Makeup Must Haves

I haven’t had any time to blog because: OLYMPICS!  I have a competitive personality & I get very into the Olympic games. (And yes, I do cry at every event – the athletes & families work so hard, waaaah!! Bravo! Bravo!)

In other news, I made the mistake of going out of the house before 4:00pm on Saturday – what a terrible decision.  It’s too hot.. but Ulta was calling my name.  I noticed the Carli Bybel Palette was finally in Ulta, yay! I’ve been wanting (another) palette for a long time.  I use that baby everyday!

Everyday-Makeup-Essentials

For the past year I’ve been using several staple makeup products that I’ve fallen in love with.  I wear these products pretty much every day.  They’re comfortable on my face & I have my routine down.  Perfect, easy, every day makeup.  These are also the products I tend to travel w/because they’re so versatile.

  1. Urban Decay Naked Basics – All my prayers were answered the day I bought this tiny pallet.  I still remember the Sephora in Dubai Marina Mall that I went to on my lunch break to buy it, I debated forever.  At this point, I think this is the most valuable makeup product I own because I use it for everything.

W.O.S. – all over the eye lid in the morning, to cover the red from my itching allergies or any blue, sleepy looking eyelid issues
Foxy – over my under eye concealer to set my makeup.
Naked 2 or Faint – contour my nose, chin or eyelid.
Crave – help with a smokey eye.
Venus – inner eye corner or a highlight.

I can do A LOT of my face w/this one baby palette. AND, I’ve had it for a year, used it almost every day, and still don’t need to buy a new one.   For every day, easy makeup – this is perfect.  I can’t live without it.

  2. L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara – Everyone talks about this mascara because it’s the best.  It truly adds volume, and every time I try to change up my mascara I always end up going back to this one.  Something about it just works.

  3. L’Oreal True Match Foundation (W5) – I wanted a drugstore foundation for everyday because I hate spending too much money on a foundation that I wear for the mornings & don’t see anyone or go anywhere. Ya know?  I wear it to look alive but don’t need to be a 10.  You feel me.  This foundation has been my go to for the past year.  I bounce between a couple colors depending on my spray tan level.

  4. Soleil Tan De Chanel Bronzer – I spoke about this in my favorites post.  I love it. I love being bronze. I love the way this bronzer blends and sits on the skin without drying my face out.  Buildable so it won’t overwhelm you & worth the money – it lasts forever.

  5. Carli Bybel Palette – I use the highlighter in this palette every single day.  Besides that, this palette is as good as gold.  It’s only $14 at Ulta right now & my gosh is it worth it!  There’s a variety of colors, including mattes and shimmers.  Although it’s so affordable, the product itself feels expensive.  I really can’t say enough, other than get it before it’s gone! I believe it’s a limited edition 🙁

Alright, alright, alright – what super basic makeup products do you use every day? Tried & true?   I still hop around a little with blush and concealer, but the others I hoard.    Once you have staple makeup products that you feel comfortable using every day – makeup is fast, easy + fun.  You feel comfortable and ready to take on the day! At least I do…

Although… these female swimmers in the Olympics are making me rethink my nail game & possibly piercing my ears. Is it time?

For now, I’m off to clean + run errands + cook + workout and prepare so I have zero distractions from Michael Phelps swim tonight 🙂

Talk soon!

Xx

July Monthly Favorites 2016 | MissBassmaster

I’m pretty happy it’s August, that means approximately one more month of torture temperatures & then we can start praying for a nice 80 degree day.  1 more sweet summer month left.

Here are my July favorites – majority of them you’ve seen me talk about before, but they’ve been with me all month, tried & true.

MissBassmaster-July-Favorites

1. Few Moda Paneled Self-Tie Midi Skirt:

I can’t find the exact skirt I’ve been wearing nearly  every day but this one is close. Something about a pretty skirt makes the heat of the summer look less miserable & manages to keep you as cool as possible.  And yes, I wear my white sneakers w/the skirt too.

2. Soleil Tan De Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base:

Anything bronze makes me happy.  I’ve been on the hunt for a bronzer that doesn’t make my face feel dry or look orange + blends nicely, I finally found one.  Perfect for summer!  It’s on the expensive side, but it’ll last a long time.  I’ve been using it every day for 2 months and I haven’t made a dent in the product.  I also love that it works on my pale skin OR my fresh spray tanned skin.  Buildable… & I would like to use it all over my body.

3. Keds Champion Oxford Sneakers:

No explanation needed.  I hate sandals.  Toes and feet and the dirty ground – No.  I’ve always been a shoe person.  I’ve been living in these classics.  Not super big & chunky, basic, great for work & weekends.

4. The Americans:

My series this month has been The Americans.  EEEEEEEE, I’m still working through the recent seasons but this show will get you HOOKED!  Russian, undercover spies living in America. EEK, so good.

5. Tinted Plastic Mason Jar:

I’ve been bringing this w/me to every pool, all summer.  I make one, big, delicious drink. This cup keeps it safe & cold all day. I love the size, style & color. Large and in charge baby.

6. Kelp Noodles:

Mystery ingredient recipe for the win!  Because Kelp Noodles are affordable, easy, healthy & delicious – they’re a staple in our kitchen now.  There’s nothing easier than whipping up a stir fry with Kelp Noodles at the end of a long day.  Too easy not to.

7. Waterproof Phone Case:

You already know! I bought one to test & now I’m ordering a few of them to leave at the house.  F-ing fantastic for beach vacations & summer days at the pool.  I’ve already said enough in my post so I won’t overkill it now.

And that’s it for July! Let me know if you have any summer favorites I need to run out & try.

Xx

My Love Affair… with Rap

Rap has saved my life a couple different times.

 My favorite music, rap

I happened upon Rap.  I used to make fun of an old boyfriend for listening to Eminem. (I still think he looked ridiculous –  shame on me, I know.)

For whatever reason he left this CD in my car. I turned on the radio one day and the rest is history. Full-on believer in the genre.

One of the reasons is the energy. The hustle. The go hard lyrics.  There’s no skipping through meadows, kissing on the second date, twirling across dance floors.  There’s hustle! Sex, work, parties! Struggle!

Rap tends to carry heavy material.  And even if what you’re going through isn’t as dramatic as the lyrics, whatever you’re carrying can feel dramatic in its own way. SO, adjust and relate.

RapMusic(3)

Thank God, one of my friends was in the car listening to “I Got the Juice” by Meek Mill and after he finished rapping along to the lyrics (Obviously turnt) –>  He looked over and said “Doesn’t that song just make you want to “RAWWWR?!”

Finally.. I knew.. I was not alone.

I knew EXACTLY what he meant.  Certain songs can make you feel unstoppable, alive, and validated.

 My favorite music, rap

This Eminem album got me through what I thought was hell. I had it raging on the radio after work every single day.  The job I had at the time was the closest thing to a jail cell + abusive police officers that I can imagine.

This music helped me leave that feeling at work.

 My favorite music, rap

Rap is poetry.  When you listen to each word, then verse, and chorus.. You’ll see what I mean.   It’s sooooooo good & such an art! I’m completely obsessed you guys.  Once you find the song that speaks to you, you’ll be on board with me.

 My favorite music, rap

There’s another version of rap.  The more-raunchy-the-better style.

I happen to enjoy that music as well.  This is the real –> zero fucks given lifestyle. And I appreciate that.  Lyrics I hear on the radio shock me, how can they say this stuff?

How many people can say or do whatever they want… & not care?  They can rap about literally any single thing on their mind!

What a luxury.

I feel like everyone today, myself included, cares so much about what other people think or say about us.

We’re so careful.

These songs, are NOT careful.

Rap is a genre that discusses love, work, loss, money, and injury in a different way. Raw & intense. Full throttle. Not your average frills and flowers.

My favorite music, rap

So it’s either Jazz or Fetty Wap.   Extreme, I know.

It all depends on the audience & mood. Jazz is great for company, or a relaxing night.  A way to turn off the mind.

Rap is great to work through your thoughts, give yourself the confidence you deserve, walk through the door with your shoulders back & head up!  Rawrrr amongst the lions!

My Favorite Music

Rap is most definitely not boring, let your mind go there and give it a try next time you’re sitting in traffic.

Currently loving Fetty Wap station on Pandora. But this Eminem album gives you all the feelings & so does Drake, because he’s easy to understand. LOL!

What music speaks to you?! I’m always on the prowl…

Have fun and hustle hard!!

Xx

You can’t exactly go many places without hearing music in Austin.  South Congress will likely have music coming from a couple different locations.

I’ve been to Guero’s Taco Bar a couple times for live music – super easy & casual. Great place for some food + drinks when the weather is nice.

South Congress is great for people watching, photo opportunities, gazing at the old cars that line the streets, and enjoying a beautiful day.

Definitely add it to your list if you visit Austin.

Life Goals: Packing Light

I’m going to New York this weekend – Ouiiiiiiiii!

Wafiq’s sister is traveling to New York, so we thought it would be a fun weekend to meet up – Stay tuned.

Weekend packing light in a carry on

TODAY I want to discuss packing.  How do you guys pack for weekend trips?  Except for the past 7 months or so I was living out of suitcases – A LOT.  (It’s really interesting how all of a sudden items are so much less important.)

Weekend packing light in a carry on

Packing is a pain in the ass.  If I’m going somewhere for less than 7 days my goal is to fit it all in a carry on and be smart. Less is more.

(Wafiq’s motto: More the merrier…)

Similar to my cleaning strategies at home, the same is true when I travel:  The more you have the more you’re weighed down. The more decisions, organizing, and thinking you have to do when you’re getting ready every day.

Packing(6)

Here’s a couple tips for my weekend in a carry on:

Plan your outfits:  Google the weather before you go. Know what to expect and plan accordingly. Think layers. And be realistic. If it’s going to be 40 degrees and you’ve been living in 100 degree weather, you ARE going to be cold – You need a jacket.

Make-up Palette’s:  Don’t bring your entire make up bag with the Halloween glitter eye shadow. I bring one palette, with a couple different products and I’m good! Make up palette’s pack wonderfully.. Think – eye shadows, blush, highlight – whatever you got goin on.

Shoesies:  Don’t travel without a comfortable pair of shoes!!!  I go with basic white sneakers because they shine bright, super comfortable, and go with everything! I would even try wearing these to a nice dinner.

Hair:  I don’t wash my hair very often, so I need a little baby shampoo bottle and I’m set. I also don’t style my hair very often (hello messy buns), so having a huge ass curling iron + fancy blow dryer + flat iron + hair spray + hair products is not necessary. If you rely on those item’s, try to pick your favorite and leave the rest behind. It’ll be a fun adventure.

Backpack:  This took me forever to figure out. A backpack is the best for traveling. EW –>  Carrying a bag/purse on your shoulder is one of the most annoying travel problems in the history of the traveling world.  A backpack is comfortable, cute, and convenient + it gives you some extra room to pack.

Weekend packing light in a carry on

Who out there is a professional carry on travel packer?  You’re my idol.  I would love to hear your tips.

I should also mention, if you’re traveling to a shopping hot spot then pack the amount of items that would fit in a carry on, but possibly bring the checked in bag instead…  Then you can shop freely, never asking yourself if it’ll all fit! JOY JOY JOY!

Ok, off to dream of New York now.

Sell Your Clothes & Buy A Camera

I’ll go ahead and say this first: Real cameras are expensive.

Real camera = Not a phone

We’re already spending near millions on our miniature computers, aka mobile phones, so spending even more on a real camera sounds like some kind of sick joke.

Buying a new camera, sony a6000

I’ve been following several blogs for years now and I always scratch my eyeballs out reading about the cameras they’re using or promoting.

{$3,000+?!?! Fucking how? Not to mention, I have nooo idea how to use one}

BUT. I’m here to confirm: a real camera is worth the expense. Womp womp.

Here’s why:

+ You adjust the photo to your preferred settings

+ Other people will actually enjoy having their picture taken

+ You’ll forever have pictures you actually love!

+ And pictures for other people to love!

+ It’s fun to learn the different settings

+ Always on the hunt to find good photography opportunities

+ You are shockingly WAY hotter.

Buying a new camera, sony a6000

Wafiq recently bought this Sony camera, honestly with very little thought.

We looked online briefly, Wafiq wanted a camera too, sold all our belongings, then were okay with the price tag, went to the store –> proud camera owners.

NOT disappointed.  For a novice camera user, I feel professional with this badass piece of equipment.

AND when you look at the price tag of many others, this one appears to be near free.

Buying a new camera, sony a6000

I should also mention, I bought Wafiq a GoPro for Christmas two years ago –> life changer r r !

Dubai grows up, rather than out. Having a camera that could capture the ground to sky was unknowingly necessary and GoPro worked miracles.

Buying a new camera, sony a6000

I can’t imagine traveling anywhere without that little baby now. I THANK GOD I HAD THIS CAMERA IN DUBAI (<— every day) ! ! !

Buying a new camera, sony a6000

Pictures a r e important. And as I get older I realize, in most moments you don’t stop and think a picture will mean anything – what are you even taking a picture of?  But it’s those pictures that are special.  Looking back at seemingly average, candid times – are the best, most memorable.

A picture is truly worth a thousand words.

Buying a new camera, sony a6000

Now that Wafiq and I have an actual camera – not running around with solely iPhones – I’m TOTALLY kicking myself for shopping at Top Shop and River Island so freaking much while living in Dubai.  Idiot.

Not saving that money and investing it into a camera? (Katie! WHY?!?!)

Buying a new camera, sony a6000

So – if you were ever on the fence of buying a real camera – 100% buy one. [For the love of God sell your TopShop clothes and buy one (<–bitter).]

Then start snapping photos of EVERYTHING.  You’ll thank yourself later.

Camera pro’s weigh in! What’s the first camera you ever bought?

Off to sift through and organize all my pictures. {Note to self – organize after every photo session. }

Night friends!

Xx

Earth Day Inspo. (Yes. Earth Day).

With Earth Day right around the corner I wanted to address a major pet peeve.

Pinterest

Excess paper and plastic.

It’s VERY 1999 to bag your groceries with paper or plastic, drink out of plastic water bottles, or use ziplock bags. Ew.

If you’re doing any of the above, this is an intervention.

Earth Day Inspo, think green

Portugal

Once you train your mind to bring your own shopping bags to the grocery store, have reusable water bottles at home, and use containers rather than ziplocks… Your life will never be the same. (Wiiiiiii!!)

Earth Day Inspo, think green

The three plastics you’re ditching FOREVER:

1. Plastic/Paper Grocery Bags: Bring your own. They’re cute, stylish, sleek, and won’t break on your walk to the car.  My favorite are the sturdy, lined bags that keep your groceries safe and cool like these.

2. Plastic Water Bottles: Water Bottles are bad news! For your body and mama earth + so unnecessary.  Buy some sleek, reusable water bottles and you’ll never drink out of a silly plastic one again. My fav.

3. Ziplock bags: I first ditched ziplock bags using these containers.  They snap on and I quickly became addicted.  (The size varieties couldn’t get better).  I’m actually so disconnected from Ziplock Bags I don’t even know how people use them…?

Earth Day Inspo, think green

SO. Earth Day – Anyone working on producing less garbage, driving electric cars, or saving the earth? I need to hear. I’m totally on board protecting this beautiful, badass, planet we live on. Gotta show mama some loooove.

Xx

All The Reasons You NEED Jazz !

For the love of Jazz.

 why you need jazz music

I’m always listening to music. I love using music as a way to let the mind wander. Isn’t it wild how different styles of music can take you so many places?

On the way to work a couple years back I remember listening to Taylor Swift’s album “Red”, then sitting at my desk feeling like I got hit in the face with rock of emotions. It was exhausting but relieving at the same time… Weird? (I was late on the Taylor Swift train but am totally on board now, sorry Kanye.)

Anyways, music is the shit. Lately it’s either Jazz or Gangster Rap.

And today we’re talking JAZZ.

Why you need jazz music

I started listening to Jazz a couple months ago when I first arrived in Los Angeles. I stayed at a guest house and the beautiful woman that cleaned before our arrival left the radio set to jazz.   (Shout out KJazz 88.1)

I assumed I would eventually change the station… but hours passed, days passed, weeks passed and I had that damn radio playing Jazz day in and day out.  From morning till night. Jazz. Jazz. Jazz.

Now let me explain why Jazz is wonderful and something you should have playing at your house.

Listening to Jazz music

5 Reasons you NEED to be listening to JAZZ:

Perfect for any occasion: If you want background noise, there’s plenty of instrumental jazz options to do so.  If you want something with a little kick, Latin jazz can keep it spicy.

Musical Xanax: This shit WORKS. Let me tell you, Los Angeles was stressful.  There was so much unknown, as if a black hole was quickly approaching to suck me in.  Having Jazz in the background helped the mornings be brighter and the evenings be quieter.

Variety: Different & interesting. Jazz has enough genres to keep things fresh. So no, you don’t need to hear Taylor Swift on repeat, one. More. Time.

Peace:  Unlike the car ride listening to Taylor Swift, or the nights of Adele – Jazz turns down the thoughts / memories / and emotions.  Although I love that music can take your mind to so many memories, sometimes that’s the last thing you need.  Jazz, with no vocals, takes you to a quiet place. Quiet the mind, quiet the emotions, quiet the body = Relaxing made easy.

Everyone’s Genre:  Music is tough because everyone loves it. And everyone has their own preferences. Jazz eliminates the problem. If you have people over for dinner, Jazz is the perfect background music. People might not know what to say, how to comment or what to ask for. Usually, one person wants country, one wants Selena Gomez, one wants Rock & Roll (eye roll, Wafiq).  Shut it all down with Jazz.

Why you need to listen to jazz

Wafiq and I ended up going to Hollywood & Highland’s Wine & Jazz Concert Series every Tuesday night throughout the summer in Los Angeles.  We were both in shock of the awesome Jazz community and the happy spirit wrapped around it.

Having these small, but impactful experiences reminds Wafiq and I how much we don’t know.  We had no idea Jazz music was so badass, and there was a whole community in love with it.  (Totally motivating to keep trying new things + giving them more than one chance. )

My go-to for Jazz music right now is Smooth Jazz on Pandora.  {Got that shit playing all day er day.}

I’ll also switch it up to Jazz, Latin Jazz or… Fetty Wap.   But that’s another day. For now, set the mood – bring out the candles, flowers, favorite drink and R E L A X ! Enjoy yourself.

Who knows Jazz music and can offer some listening suggestions? Also, are there any other genres I need to check out? What’s on your Pandora?

Ok, off to dream away to jazz!
